    As Pacific Mexico cruisers my wife and I don’t count food as an expense since we need to eat wherever we live. You did very well on boat repairs. We have a similar trawler as you so we know the costs to upkeep and run a trawler. We were surprised to see how many nights you spent in marinas. In Mexico we cruise for 7 months and spend less than 10 days at a dock. That would be the biggest difference in Mexico and the loop

    Well done. I admit I'll be astonished and impressed if the Flarespace units remain leak-proof after you take the van over twisty, bumpy roads. The metal sides of the van will probably twist or bulge slightly from the stress, causing high separation loads on the metal-fiberglass bond. No way a metal to fiberglass bond can be as strong as a methacrylic fiberglass to fiberglass bond. Time will tell. Enjoying the process. Keep the van in the shade always.

    Exciting new project. Your layout looks great, but I am alarmed by the lack of windows. Add two at the head and foot of the bed for cross-ventilation and light, and at least one at the settee/work space. Living in a small space is hard enough, but living in a dark, small space is claustrophobic. Also. your plan looks like the settee may block access from the driving compartment into the back of the van -- is that the case? Be sure to try to use light-weight components where possible -- the Mercedes Sprinter van engine is a tad anemic for the size and weight it is pushing, so keeping weight down will help fuel mileage and performance.

    Big cutout for small windows ... is there a reason why the flares are so big and the window itself is so small in comparison?

    • @SchoandJo
      @SchoandJo 4 дня назад

      I think mainly it's because of the curvature of the flare. I think it'll make more sense when the bed is fully installed because the mattress will come up into the flare with our feet just below the window 😁

    Can I suggest that you apply sealant on the outside of the flares (at the join to vanbody) ... if you get into a colder climate (freezing temperatures) and if any moisture is between the flare and van body, freeze expansion can/will cause damage. You want to prevent moisture from getting in-between the two surfaces.

  • @mvseaurchin7455
    @mvseaurchin7455 5 дней назад

    Elliot, Your using a saw blade that is too big at about 1". it can't turn the corners well like a blade that is about 1/4". If you know you don't have any wires in the way, I'd recommend also to cut from the outside in.

    • @SchoandJo
      @SchoandJo 3 дня назад

      That's interesting about the blade length... I don't think it would have helped too much in this case, because the edges of the van are what prevented the jigsaw itself from turning. Going outside would have been much smoother but we were worried about possibly measuring wrong and then cutting more than we should have cut. Since we were matching the interior metal it made that part easier! In retrospect that wasn't a real issue as we have trim and the flare is so much further than the whole but nevertheless, that's why we didn't :) For the next big hole, the rear windows, we found a really nice combination of jigsaw for the long, multitool for the curves, and grinder to smooth out the edges. It looked really nice just took a little bit longer and had a few more metal shavings. Cheers and thanks for the suggestion :)

    I remember being very nervous about that first hole in the new van. On your earlier video someone commented on using swivel seats rather than your bench seats. I would make the same recommendation. I used a bench for five years in our van and finally added a swivel passenger seat. It is by far the most comfortable spot in the van and extends the living space into the front. We put a custom curtain in the windshield when parked. Stay flexible on your design and try using the van some during the build. We definitely learned during our early trips.

    • @SchoandJo
      @SchoandJo 5 дней назад

      Great recommendation, and we will try and stay as flexible as possible! We don't know what we don't know, so gotta be ready to pivot as necessary. We are planning a swivel seat, maybe two if all goes well with the budget!

    Why do they not come in white from Manufacture? You should not have to paint to match when vans only come in 6 colors (I know factory shade white might be off a tad from Mercedes to Ford, etc), but you would be the only one to notice…..You will be using metal primer throughout your project, buy a quart and do it right (spray paint does not have the same solids as a can of paint). I will say Jenny looks happy and so relaxed being off the boat…lol…..Looks great

    • @SchoandJo
      @SchoandJo 5 дней назад

      It would have saved a step to be white already! My guess is that while the whites look similar, there's probably many different variations. We color matched to our gas cap, so very unique!
